> CRONULLA SKATE PARK BATTLE
Early days in the battle for the park I was playing around with paintshop and pasted Cairns onto Wanda. Yeah, they're tanks, mech warriors, razor wire and cop cars to keep the few recalcitrant residents off skaters' backs.
Latest is that in about a month the council will put out for tender the whole process of consultation and design with aim of follow-on construction. This is the first step. I reinforced that they must not use regular construction company for the job. That it MUST be a reputable skate park company. I sent the link to "a brand new park you won't believe" at Kincumber as an example of what can go wrong. I'll follow up with the engineering department.
Excusee me Cobast could e-mail me that map?
but just without thee tanks and shieeet just park and etc. :)

Hey Yumma, I've sent you a paintshop and a jpeg version.
What ya gunna to do with it?
so anything happening? or did the old cunts who dont want the park secretly win
Nope, everything is still going ahead (at least I'm pretty sure). I think the council is now racking up funds for all of it...
I spoke to the council last week. The tender docs are nearly ready to go out. They're not sure whether to advertise or just mail the tender to selected park building companies. I keep reminding them about only using GOOD companies.
Jan Foreshaw is now deputy mayor and she's good value. She keeps chasing it up to make sure it keeps going ahead. Pity the mayor didn't go down though.
I agree, more parks should start catering for street skaters as it is imo more popular than tranny skating in Sydney & now that schools are off grounds we are left with little street spots to skate
Hey Guys, just got word today that the tender doc for the Cronulla park is ready to be sent out in January.
They have taken on board "the skaters' view" and have written in the tender about no late changes in the design, no corrupting the design to appease "residents", that it needs to be designed to be challenging to maintain interest so skaters aren't bored in no time, not catering to the lowest denominator or skooters, must be an accomplished skate park builder, etc etc. So the council has listened.
The tenderer will be doing the consultation with local skaters and residents to get the best design FOR SKATERS. All with council's support.
Anyone who legitimately wants a copy of the tender doc, contact me and I'll forward your details to the council.
If there is a particular company you can recommend send me their details as well.
QUESTION. After the Kincumber debacle, should Oasis be considered?
Even though they didn't build Kincumber, there is something about the designs of their parks that screams 2000.
Being nearly 2010, that's a pretty serious indictment.
"that it needs to be designed to be challenging to maintain interest so skaters aren't bored in no time"
I have a serious issue with statements like this. I have seen this kind of statement used time and time again by older skateboarders to justify another dirty big bowl, which for the most part never ever gets used. I for one am getting a bit sick of all this vacant 9+ foot tranny.
If you are going to put in a statement like that it needs to be balanced with a statement like the below perhaps.
"blah blah needs to be designed so it does not become a white elephant park waiting for the 2 times a year when some pro skateboarders come to skate it "
Yeah Drew, know where you're coming from.
I was just paraphrasing what I was told over the phone so don't be too fussed about it. What they were trying to say was don't design something lame that will only suit beginners to intermediate and scooter kids. They want something that the SKATERS will be really proud of and take ownership of it.
