Starting photography busniess

Hey everyone

I am currently in the process of applying for the Australian Government's NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme).

I plan to start my own photography business over the next 12 months; specializing in the production of documentary, journalistic, editorial and advertising images.

First, however, I would like to pose some questions to anyone who feels knowledgeable enough to answer (this means you).

So please, feel welcome to help me with my market research. I greatly appreciate your time!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Where do/would you typically try to find a suitable photographer (to meet whatever your needs may be)?

2. How many different photographers do/would you seriously consider hiring before making a final decision?

3. What would you generally expect to pay for this service?

4. Have you paid for photography services before? If yes, were you satisfied with the results?

5. If satisfied with the results, would you recommend the same photographer to your business/family/friends if the topic were to come up in conversation?

6. Do/would you feel more comfortable having read a brief biography on the photographer before hiring him/her? Or is his/her folio all that matters?

chuck your portfolio up here...

photo jobs are 90% word of mouth

only do work for free if youre 100% sure it will benefit your portfolio or will definately lead to work, once you get burnt a few times youll learn the hard way

just compare your work to others getting paid for the same sort of work, if you think you can achieve similar results or better then go for it....

yes Dan, that's dave b with a casual blunt in port melbourne.

Jerry, why not make a living out of taking photos? sure as hell beats pretty much everything else.

cheers Andre, I'll chuck the website up when it's done. word of mouth definitely seams to reap the rewards eh.

I work in an ad agency as an art director and deal with photographers for certain projects, and have them come in every now n then to show folios etc.

each agency generally has a certain studio (local) that they will deal with, (we do alot through C.I studios in melbourne, check out their site if you can)

N yeh each studio having people who specialise in different things; e.g. food, lifestyle, people, environment etc etc. and from there its just picking the person who you feel can best get the look your after.

if i'm looking for a certain style, ill usually scour the net looking for reference images & specific photographer examples so in my eyes a good website is really important. Especially if your new to the industry, it would be about getting around to as many places (ad agencies, newspapers, who ever you want to work for) and showing them your stuff, letting them meet you etc.

In terms of repeat business, its like anything really. If you do a good job, and are good to work with, people will want to hire you for more stuff.

hope that made sense. good luck

Thanks for that info Andrew, I'd love be on an agencies list however I'm sure that takes some convincing. Everyone has been happy with the paid work I've done so far, I just need to source more clients. The website will aid this..hopefully. Do you have any tips regarding joining an agency? I often have a portraiture studio at my disposal, perhaps this to help me gain corporate portraiture work?

Of the styles you listed you want to start working in, do you have a folio built to show that kind of work specifically?
