When ever i take raw files off an audio CD on my computer they appear as AIFF files. Im not sure whether its a Mac thing or not
if anyone is interested:
"They are both EXACTLY the same sonically speaking... I think they're both RAW PCM audio. The only difference is the header information, the bit that tells a sequencer/media player what bit depth, sample rate, length etc.. the clip is."
.wav - Microsoft and IBM
.aiff - Apple / (Electronic Arts - Interchange File Format (IFF))
the only real difference i can find is that .wavs are limited to 2GB.

.iff (image format) and .aiff (audio format) both started out their lives on Amiga computers if I remember correctly. Both were renowned for having extremely small file sizes because the Amiga 500 ran from 880k floppy disks.
Electronic Arts, which is now a games developing giant started life producing the best paint package available for the Amiga.
